Professional Biography
Dr. Murugesh (Muru) Nidyananda is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and additionally holds a Certificate of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Muru completed medical school at Monash University. He first received the "Peer of the Year" award in 2016 as a junior doctor. He then completed his generalist training in Psychiatry at the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he was awarded "Registrar of the Year" in 2019. Throughout his training, he has held various leadership roles, including Chief Registrar for Psychiatry, registrar representative for Tasmanian trainees on the Bi-national Committee of the College, registrar representative for the Subcommittee of Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (SATCAP), and member of the Tasmanian Branch Committee. Currently, as a fellow, he serves as the Chair of the WA Branch Committee and sits on the Ministerial Advisory Panel Membership for the WA Mental Health Commission.
He completed his advanced training in child and adolescent psychiatry at Melbourne University's Mindful Centre for Training and Research, while working at Clare House, at the Gender Clinic in Clinic 60, and conducting research under Professor Brett McDermott.
Dr. Muru currently works at Royal Perth Hospital, is a senior lecturer at the University of Western Australia, and his experience is driven by his passion for supporting gender-diverse individuals and their families through a biopsychosocial approach centered on family therapy-informed principles.
He also has a keen interest in working with the perinatal population and is a member of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand and the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD).
In light of these governance responsibilities within the College, and to avoid any potential conflicts of interest, Dr Muru does NOT see patients in Western Australia or New South Wales.
His focus in these regions remains on supporting systemic improvements in psychiatric care, including advocacy and leadership within professional bodies.
