To get an autism diagnosis in Australia, the best place to start is by seeing your Doctor for a referral to a specialist Psychiatrist.

Both children and adults can follow this pathway with assessment and diagnostic options for public (often via GP referral) or private services.

At Fluence Clinic, we offer online autism testing & diagnosis via Telehealth for adults and children – all you need is a referral.

During your autism spectrum assessment, your Psychiatrist will use multi-clinician assessments, observations, and standardised tools (like ADOS-2) to evaluate developmental history and current functioning, leading to a formal diagnosis for accessing support services.

Our Autism Assessment & Diagnosis Process

Step 1: Get a Referral from your local Doctor

A GP (Doctor) referral is required to have an ASD assessment with Fluence Clinic.

Please make sure your GP’s referral includes the key requirements below to avoid any delays.

Is addressed to Fluence Clinic or is an open referral.
We cannot accept referrals addressed elsewhere specifically.

Clearly states the purpose of the referral, for example:
“I am referring this patient for an ASD assessment.”

Includes the relevant Medicare Item Code, which is 291.

Ideally includes confirmation of your GP’s willingness to co-prescribe as follows:

“I am willing to do the prescribing, including initiation, under the guidance of the psychiatrist if medication is recommended for this patient.”

These requirements are in addition to standard referral items like your contact details, medical history, medications, symptoms, clinic & GP provider details, etc.

The referral can be emailed to [email protected]

Step 2: Complete Forms

Once we receive your referral from your GP, you will be sent your pre-booking forms.

Fill out the pre-booking forms we’ll send to you. These will take you 45-60 minutes to complete.

Step 3: Make Payment

Pay for the appointment via online payment or bank transfer. You’ll receive your rebate 1-2 weeks post-appointment.*

Step 4: Book In Online

Once forms & fees are received, you’ll be ready to book.

You’ll pick a date & time in the booking calendar sent to you.

Step 5: ASD Assessment

Have your telehealth appointment with our psychiatrist.

The appointment for your assessment will last 45-60 minutes.

Step 6: Post Assessment

Your Psychiatrist will provide you and your GP with a comprehensive written report.

If you have attracted a diagnosis of ASD, your Psychiatrist will provide a delegation letter that enables your GP to apply for a permit to prescribe medication.
