Dr. Murugesh (Muru) Nidyananda is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and also holds a Certificate of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Muru completed medical school at Monash University, and he first won the “Peer of the Year” award in 2016 as a junior doctor. He then completed his generalist training in Psychiatry at Royal Hobart Hospital and while there won the “Registrar of the Year” award in 2019. Throughout his training, he has held leadership roles, including being the Chief Registrar for psychiatry, the registrar representative for Tasmanian trainees on the Bi-national Committee of the College, the registrar representative for the Subcommittee of Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (SATCAP), and also serving on the Tasmanian Branch Committee. He is currently Chair of the WA Branch Committee.
He completed his advanced training in child and adolescent psychiatry at Melbourne University’s Mindful Centre for Training and Research, while working in Clare House, at the Gender Clinic in Clinic 60, and undertaking research with Professor Brett McDermott.
He currently works at Royal Perth Hospital and his experience is driven by his passion to support gender-diverse individuals and their families using a biopsychosocial approach centred on family therapy-informed principles.
He also has a keen interest in working with the perinatal population and is a member of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand and a member of the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD).
